NR 08.01.006
August 4, 2008
Ottawa (ON) Over 100 military golfers will be hitting the links from August 17 to 23 as part of the 5th World Military Golf Championship. Competitors from 14 nations, from Bahrain to Zambia, will join their Canadian compatriots at Ottawas Hylands Golf Club.
“The World Military Golf Championship provides an excellent opportunity for Canadian Forces (CF) personnel to meet and identify with military athletes from around the world,“ said the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. “I'm proud that this year's event will be held in Canada. Events such as this bring people together and promote friendship throughout many military communities.“
“Sports are a fundamental element of the CF,“ said General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff. “Sports reflect skills and attributes such as perseverance, training, teamwork and discipline characteristics that define our Canadian Forces and reflect our culture of excellence.“
“The Canadian Forces (CF) try to host one international sporting event a year, and this year were excited about competing against some great military golfers at Hylands“ explains Peter Nicol, International Sports Manager in the Personnel Support Programs Division of Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services (CFPFSS).
The CF participates in international sports as a member of the Conseil international du sport militaire (CISM), an international military sports organization founded in 1948 that is open to all nations. CISM now boasts 131 member countries and holds more than 20 competitions annually. The fundamental aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between armed forces as a means to foster world peace. These ideas are encapsulated in the CISM motto “Friendship through Sport“. Canada currently participates in CISM basketball, fencing, golf, running, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball and wrestling.
